Semi Custom Bedding: Pick a Design, Add Your Text

Semi custom bedding is a finished design you personalize. At Hobbies Bedding, you pick one of 47 designs, fill in two text fields, then choose a type, size and set. Prices run from $24.90 to $154.90, depending on those three choices.

Below, each of those choices gets worked through against your own bed. If you'd rather see the designs first, browse all 47 hobby designs and come back once you've found one you like.

1. What do you actually customize?

"Semi custom" means the artwork stays the same and the words are yours. Every one of the 47 product pages in the collection says the same thing: "Custom Options: Offers two text input options for personalization." You don't upload a photo and you don't redraw the design. You type into two fields, and that text goes onto the design you picked.

The designs are built around hobbies and work. Some are trucking scenes, like a semi truck in front of a faith-themed backdrop. Others are reading scenes: a girl with a book, set against bookshelves, a leopard pattern or a stack of oversized books. If one of those is close to what you want, start there. See how the trucker prayer design lays out its text.

How to apply it: Write out both lines before you open a product page. Most people put a name in one field and a short phrase in the other. Read them aloud and check the spelling of every name. Personalized items are usually made to order, so a typo printed on a blanket is hard to undo. Keep each line short, and check on the product page how much room each field gives you before you settle on the wording.

Check before deciding:

  • Both text lines are written out and spelled correctly
  • The design's layout leaves room for text the length of yours
  • You know who the item is for, so the name fits the recipient
  • You've seen the design on the product page, not only in a thumbnail

2. Fleece, sherpa, duvet cover, quilt or comforter: which should you buy?

Product pages list two groups of options. Material covers Fleece and Sherpa, which are blankets. Bedding Type covers Duvet Cover, Quilt and Comforter, which go on the bed. Pick the group first, then the option inside it.

Option Where it's listed Starting price What you're getting Suits
Fleece Material $24.90 A fleece blanket with your design and text The lowest-cost way in; a gift or a throw for the sofa
Duvet Cover Bedding Type $34.90 A cover that goes over a duvet insert People who already own an insert and want a cover that comes off
Sherpa Material $39.90 A sherpa blanket with your design and text Someone who wants a throw with a textured, plush face instead of flat fleece
Quilt Bedding Type $46.90 A quilted bed cover with your design and text A lighter layer that lies flat on the bed
Comforter Bedding Type $64.90 One filled piece with your design and text Anyone who wants one item on the bed, with no separate insert

How to apply it: Look at what's on your bed now. If it's a plain insert you like, a duvet cover is the cheapest bed option. If there's nothing there, compare the comforter with a quilt. If the item is for a couch, a reading chair or a gift, the blankets start lowest. Compare the fleece and sherpa versions of the leopard reading blanket.

Check before deciding:

  • Is it going on a bed or used as a throw?
  • Do you already own a duvet insert? The listing will say what comes with a duvet cover.
  • Does the design you want list the type you want in its options?
  • Is the starting price for that type within your budget?

3. What size semi custom bedding fits my bed?

Go by the inches, not the size name. The collection lists sizes in three separate systems. Several names appear in more than one of them, with different measurements.

  • US-labelled: US Twin 68" x 88" · US Full 78" x 88" · US Queen 88" x 88" · US King 104" x 88"
  • Unlabelled: Twin 68" x 86" · Full 80" x 90" · Queen 90" x 90" · King 102" x 91"
  • Metric: Twin 173 x 218 cm · Full 200 x 230 cm · Queen 228 x 228 cm
  • Blanket sizes: 40" x 30" · 50" x 40" · Throw 60" x 70"

So "Full" can mean 78" x 88" or 80" x 90". Which system you see depends on the product you open, so the measurement printed next to the size name on that page is the one to trust.

Jeminise bedding dimension chart showing how Twin, Full, Queen (90" × 90"), and King sizes scale across standard mattresses.

How to apply it: Measure your mattress width, length and depth. Then use two calculations:

  • Overhang on each side = (bedding width − mattress width) ÷ 2
  • Overhang at the foot = bedding length − mattress length (assuming the top edge sits at the head of the bed)

If the side overhang is less than your mattress depth, the sides of the mattress will show.

Check before deciding:

  • Mattress measured, including depth
  • Inches on the product page compared with your measurements, not just the size name
  • Side overhang worked out for both sizes if two have the same name
  • Where you want the edge to fall: mattress side, box spring or floor

4. How much will it cost, and what pushes the price up?

Every price in the collection falls between $24.90 and $154.90. Three choices set where your order lands: type, size and set. These are the published starting prices:

  • By type: Fleece $24.90 · Duvet Cover $34.90 · Sherpa $39.90 · Quilt $46.90 · Comforter $64.90
  • By size: 40" x 30" $24.90 · US Twin $34.90 · 50" x 40" $34.90 · US Full $44.90
  • By set: No Pillowcases $34.90 · 1 Pillowcase (20" x 30") $44.90

Each figure is the lowest price for that one option. They aren't add-ons, so you can't add them together to get your total. Starting prices are listed above only for those options. For Queen, King and the larger sets, select them on the product page and read the price it shows.

These are the five set options:

  • No Pillowcases
  • 1 Pillowcase (20" x 30")
  • 2 Pillowcases (20" x 30")
  • 2 Pillowcases + 1 Sheet
  • 4 Pillowcases (20" x 30")

How to apply it: Count the pillows you sleep with and check whether you need a sheet. Then pick the smallest set that covers both. For a gift blanket, the lowest-priced material and size is usually enough. See the giant book stack blanket's sizes and starting price.

Check before deciding:

  • Pillow count matches the set
  • 20" x 30" pillowcases fit your pillows
  • Total price checked on the product page after choosing type, size and set
  • Whether a sheet is needed or you already have one

5. What is it made of, and can you machine wash it?

Not every product page says. 36 of the 47 pages state "Material Details: Made from soft and durable polyester." 43 of the 47 state "Easy Care: Machine washable for convenient cleaning." That leaves 11 pages that don't mention the fabric and 4 that don't mention washing (47 minus each figure). That doesn't mean those products are different. It means the page doesn't tell you.

How to apply it: On the product page you're about to order from, look for both lines. If both are there, you have the fabric and the washing method in writing. If either is missing, ask the shop before you order. The care line says machine washable but gives no water temperature or drying method, so check the care label when the item arrives before its first wash.

Check before deciding:

  • The material line appears on your chosen product page
  • The machine-washable line appears on the same page
  • You know how you'll check temperature and drying before the first wash
  • Polyester suits the person it's for

6. Worked example: a trucker design for a full bed

The figures here are made up to show the steps. This isn't a customer story.

Say someone wants the metallic mesh semi truck design for a full bed. Their mattress (example figures, not a standard size) measures 54" wide, 75" long and 10" deep. They have no duvet insert and sleep with one pillow.

  1. Type. With no insert, a duvet cover (from $34.90) would mean buying one. They compare the comforter (from $64.90) with a quilt (from $46.90) and choose the comforter, so there's just one piece to buy.
  2. Size. US Full is 78" x 88". Side overhang = (78 − 54) ÷ 2 = 12". Foot overhang = 88 − 75 = 13". The side overhang is deeper than the 10" mattress, so the sides are covered. If the page lists Full 80" x 90" instead, they run the same two sums with those figures.
  3. Set. One pillow, so 1 Pillowcase (20" x 30").
  4. Text. Line one: the recipient's first name. Line two: a short phrase. Both are checked for spelling.
  5. Price. They read the total on the page after choosing all three options. They don't add the starting prices together.
  6. Care. They confirm the polyester and machine-washable lines are on this product's page.

To follow these steps with a real design, open the metallic mesh semi truck bedding and set your size. Have your mattress measurements ready when you do.
