The Queen bed is undeniably the most popular mattress size in North America, occupying the sweet spot in master bedrooms, guest suites, and contemporary apartments. Measuring 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, a standard Queen mattress comfortably accommodates couples while fitting neatly into standard room dimensions. However, when it comes to purchasing bedding—whether a plush comforter, tailored quilt, or protective duvet cover—many shoppers are surprised to find that "Queen" bedding comes in a range of width and length measurements. Choosing the wrong dimensions can lead to frustrating bed-making, with covers that barely cover the mattress edges or drag clumsily across bedroom floors.
At JEMINISE, our bedding catalog features beautifully printed comforters, quilts, and duvet covers engineered with generous North American sizing standards to guarantee an elegant drape. This comprehensive buying guide explains exact mattress measurements, calculates side drop requirements, compares quilt versus comforter drape, and details verified catalog models.

Standard Queen Mattress Dimensions & Mattress Depth
To determine what size bedding will look best on your bed, you must consider both the surface dimensions and the vertical height of your mattress:
- Standard Queen Mattress Surface: Exactly 60 inches wide by 80 inches long (152 cm x 203 cm).
- Standard Mattress Depth: Typically ranges from 9 to 11 inches.
- Pillow-Top & Deep Mattresses: Often measure between 12 and 16 inches deep, especially when combined with a gel memory foam mattress topper.
Accounting for mattress depth is essential: a mattress with a 3-inch plush topper requires additional bedding width to ensure the sides of the mattress and sheets remain completely concealed.
Calculating Proper Bedding Drape: The Side Drop Formula
To find your ideal comforter or quilt width, use this simple formula:
Ideal Bedding Width = Mattress Width (60") + (2 x Desired Side Drop)
- Tailored Modern Drape (12"–14" drop): For a mattress 10" to 12" deep, a drop of 12" to 14" covers the mattress and reaches just to the top of the bed frame or box spring. This requires a bedding width of 84" to 88".
- Generous Full Drape (15"–16" drop): For deep pillow-top mattresses or sleepers who share the bed and want generous coverage, a drop of 15" ensures both partners stay warm with no midnight draft. This requires a width of 90".
JEMINISE Queen bedding is crafted in standard 88" x 88" or 90" x 90" dimensions, providing generous, elegant drape across virtually all standard and pillow-top Queen beds.
